Despite the low percentage of Black-American players in MLB, Black baseball players are more civically engaged and willing to give back to their communities now than ever before.
Last month, I sat down with Justyn-Henry Malloy, an emerging star with the Detriot Tigers, to talk about his first-ever camp, held in his home state of New Jersey, and the amazing organization he chose to support Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a global, volunteer-based nonprofit providing children with life-saving surgery and care for cleft lip and palate.
This type of community engagement occurs at every level of Black baseball through organizations like the Players Alliance and a new generation of players who deeply care about giving back.
Shout out to players like Will Benson (Reds), Richie (Rays) and Josh Palacios (Pirates), Xavier Edwards (Marlins), Hunter Green (Reds), Tevin Tucker (Rockies), and so many more Black players giving back locally.
