Let me start this by saying something that it has taken me a lifetime to learn: Everything ain’t for Everybody. If something is not for you, it’s not for you.
The Off-White X MLB Capsule Collection is not for me.
Naturally, as a streetwear fan, when the collaboration was announced, I was hype — yet cautious. I’m always excited when these worlds collide because, sometimes, the collaborations are dope (Off-White X Nike). And consumers outside of the normal audience really rock with them. For example, Fear of God X MLB hats are everywhere; it’s a beautiful thing.
Where Off-White went left for me on this capsule is that they skewed heavily to the high fashion audience. You know, the audience that slums it with streetwear – but is not streetwear. I know this by the price points: Hats cost $260, T-Shirts cost $355, Hoodies cost $630, Jerseys cost $1,030, those are not prices for MLB fans or loyal streetwear customers. Yes, some streetwear collab prices are crazy high — especially Off-White, but a lot of those are secondary market prices too.
The biggest issue I have is with the product itself. The holes are not for me — I can’t with the holes. What are we doing with the holes? If I’m ever in a room with Off-White Art and Image Director Ibrahim Kamara best believe I will ask about the holes.
The jersey is over 1K, and it has large, not-fashionable, holes? We can do better.
If there is a product in the capsule that I rock with, it’s the hoodie. I saw a few hoodies that are dope (no holes): the Marlins and the A’s are attractive and unisex; though they are slim fit, with rules me out.
Overall, for this to be the first collaboration between Off-White and MLB, it’s an uninspired dud. But you not going to find this capsule in any MLB stadium, nope. Again, this is not for us. It will be in Off-White web store and select Off-White stores throughout the world.
Off-White X Nike, this is not. But RIP to Virgil. A true innovative legend.
